February is almost upon us, and with it a host of game
releases of both new games, expansions, and HD remasters.
From turn-based battles against aliens, monsters, and enemy
troops, to zombie shooters and beat-em-up brawlers, February isn’t the biggest
video game month of the year, but there’s a little bit of something here for
everyone.
And now, the biggest upcoming games of February, 2016:
Gravity Rush Remastered (PS4, Feb. 2nd)
The free-roaming PS Vita title is finally making it to home
consoles with a PS4 release this February. Easily one of the best titles on
Sony’s neglected handheld system, it should be a blast to once again play as
the gravity-defying Kat in what looks to be a pretty terrific remaster. While
it gives gamers one fewer reason to buy a PlayStation Vita, it gives the PS4
yet another stellar exclusive in the home console market.
XCOM 2 (PC, Mac, Linux, Feb. 5th)
Things didn’t go so well when aliens invaded Earth. The
sequel to Firaxis’ excellent turn-based strategy game takes place in a world
ruled over by the alien invaders and a diabolical human government
collaborating with the conquerors. Everything about XCOM 2 screams
“Play me and never stop!” If it’s anywhere near as addictive as the last game,
I may have to disappear for a few days.
Dying Light: The Following (PC,
PS4, Xbox One, Feb. 9th)
The Following expansion for everyone’s favorite
zombie-parkour game of 2015 hits shelves just about a year after the original
game came out. The new content includes a huge rural map and a new buggy that
you can drive around to help plow your way through zombie mobs. It’s a huge
expansion that not only adds things to do and places to explore, but new
leveling elements and more. I haven’t played Dying Light in a
while, but I’m excited to pick it back up next month.
Unravel (PC, PS4, Xbox One, Feb. 9th)
In Unravel you platform and puzzle your way
around a human world as a little yarn creature named Yarny and yes, it looks
every bit as adorable as it sounds. It’s a 2.5D sidescroller, which may not be
everyone’s cup of tea, but man does it look gorgeous. And adorable. Hopefully
it’s also fun and challenging.
Street Fighter V (PC, PS4, Feb. 16th)
Street Fighter V needs no introduction. The
long-running brawler franchise has never looked so good. It’s just a shame it
isn’t releasing on Xbox One as well as PC and PS4.
Fire Emblem Fates (3DS, Feb. 19th)
Fire Emblem Fates is actually two games: Conquest and Birthright tell
two sides of the same story, and playing both will give you a more complete
portrait of the conflict. Fire Emblem is a terrific turn-based
fantasy RPG and I’m excited to see what this new entry is like. It’s funny, I
was playing the last Fire Emblem not long after I finished the
last XCOM game. For a while there, everything I was playing
was turn-based. Déjà vu!
Far Cry Primal (PS4, Xbox One, Feb. 23rd)
Ubisoft is taking us back to the caveman days in Far
Cry Primal, the first game in the series to ditch guns altogether and go
back in time to prehistoric days. Animal hunting, summoning, and beast mastery
all comprise this new take on Ubisoft’s biggest first-person shooter. I’m
pretty excited, though I admit that playing without a gun—with bow as your
primary ranged weapon—could get old more quickly. We shall see soon enough.
Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 (PC,
PS4, Xbox One Feb. 23rd)
I admit, I couldn’t really get into the first Plants
Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare game, even though I found its humor
refreshing and its take on the genre a breath of fresh air. It just wasn’t my
kind of game. It didn’t click for me. But plenty of people loved it, and it was
certainly a nice exclusive for the Xbox One when it came out. The sequel
launches across platforms, however, which is good for everyone involved. Better
yet, the game has solo/offline mode this time around which is awesome.
